  12. This file explains how to start the automated 4DOS installation process,
  13. or to print the manual and other documentation so you can install 4DOS
  14. manually.  You can print this file with the command:
  15.  
  16.       copy a:readme.1st prn
  17.  
  18. (modify this command if your diskette is not in drive A:).
  19.  
  20. Most of the 4DOS files are stored in compressed form on this disk in the
  21. file 4DOS.ZIP.  The procedures below use the PKUNZIP program on the disk
  22. to extract the 4DOS files and store them on another disk.
  23.  
  24. If you have a registered copy of 4DOS, the registered disk contains the
  25. BRAND program used to install your name and serial number into 4DOS; and
  26. the 4DOS286.EXE and SHELL2E files (in the file 4DOS2.ZIP).

  31. To install 4DOS automatically on your system, place this disk in any
  32. drive it fits in, and enter the command:
  33.  
  34.            x:install x y
  35.  
  36. where "x" is the drive that the 4DOS disk is in, and "y" is the drive
  37. where you want to install 4DOS.  (If these parameters are omitted,
  38. INSTALL will use A: and C: respectively, which will install 4DOS from
  39. drive A: onto your hard disk in drive C:.)  For example, to install 4DOS
  40. on drive D from a diskette in drive B, enter the command:

  42.            b:install b d

  44. The automatic installation batch file will allow you to print the manual
  45. and other documentation files if you wish.
  46.  
  47.    PLEASE NOTE:  If you are upgrading from an earlier version of 4DOS,
  48.    do NOT install the 4DOS version 3.03 files in the directory in which
  49.    your old 4DOS files are stored.  Install them in a different direc-
  50.    tory, and read the upgrade instructions in README.DOC before reboot-
  51.    ing your system under 4DOS 3.03.

  53. INSTALL requires about 20 bytes of free environment space to get started
  54. correctly.  If INSTALL gives you the message "out of environment space",
  55. try increasing the environment size you have set for COMMAND.COM or 4DOS
  56. with the /E:nnn option on the SHELL= line in CONFIG.SYS, or removing
  57. some environment variables.

  59. If you prefer to do the installation manually, or to take a look at the
  60. documentation first, you can use PKUNZIP to extract the files you want. 
  61. Change to the drive and directory where you want the files stored, and
  62. enter the command:

  64.       x:pkunzip x:4dos 4dos.doc readme.doc update30.doc compat.doc
  65.  
  66. where "x" is the drive your 4DOS disk is in.  This will extract all of
  67. the documentation files.  They'll take about 470K of disk space after
  68. exctraction; you can use a subset of the command to extract only some of
  69. them.

  71. Any of these files can be printed.  Just use the appropriate command,
  72. for example:
  73.  
  74.            copy 4dos.doc prn
  75.            copy readme.doc prn
  76.  
  77. All documentation files have form feeds and footers, and are formatted
  78. to print correctly on most PC printers, including laser printers.  Some
  79. of the files are long and you may not want to print them right away; if
  80. so you can view them with any file viewer, including the 4DOS LIST
  81. command.

  83. For license and registration information, see README.DOC and ORDER.FRM,
  84. also included in the 4DOS.ZIP file.  The license agreement gives you 21
  85. days to evaluate 4DOS; after this time you must register if you want to
  86. continue using 4DOS.

  90. copy of 4DOS, when doing a manual installation please note that the
  91. 4DOS286.EXE and SHELL2E files are now on the second disk, in the file
  92. 4DOS2.ZIP; if you have a shareware copy, these files are not included
  93. (see README.DOC for a detailed explanation).
